Energy Basics: Shielding

Here we go again.  This exercise is based on the previous Grounding and Centring exercises.  So if you haven’t read them yet, please do so.  And remember, that what I’m presenting is just one method.  Feel free to experiment with others as well.  Find what works best for you.

Theory

When people talk about shielding, they often talk in absolutes; about having their shields either up or down.  This is black and white approach is a very common misconception about shielding.  Your shield doesn’t have only two settings.  Rather it has a range.  Think of it as your psychic thermostat.  You can move it up or down as needed in a given situation so that you remain in your personal comfort zone.

So for example, if you’re in a busy mall, you’re probably going to have to put those shields at a higher setting then if you were having a picnic in quiet park.  Or maybe Aunt Sarah is source of stress for you.  So your shield will be up higher around her then with your best friend David who just GETS you and is always ready to talk things through if needed.

Using this approach is important as our shields are reactive to our expectations.  So if we expect something to be too much, they will be and the shields will crumble.  Likewise, if we expect that shielding will cut us off from feeling energy and emotion outside of ourselves, they will.

I’ve run into a more than a few people who refuse to shield because they say they feel like it puts them in a sensory deprivation tank.  If that’s how it’s working for you, than it’s time to go back to basics and look at WHY.

Note: Stable shields require that you ground and centre first.  Otherwise it’s like trying to build a house on quick sand.

Exercise

Make sure you’ve grounded and centred first.  You can stand or sit for this exercise.  But I don’t recommend lying down.

Close your eyes and focus on your breathing.  Just stay were you are and breathe.  As you do feel the energy around you, the energy in the earth you’re grounded to, the energy that is within you.  Realize that all that energy is there for you mould as you need it.

When you’re ready gather that energy up in your mental/psychic “hands” and start warping it about you, clockwise.  Take your time.  As you work begin to focus on spinning the energy faster and faster.  While it “moves” direct it make an egg shape about you.  Remember to go under your feet as well covering your head.

Keep spinning it (always clockwise when building it up) until you feel safe and secure; until you have the shield at the level you want.  When you get to that point slow down the spinning until it stops all together and then feel that shield “solidify” into the settings you programmed into it.

Breathe and check over your shield.  Any holes?  Weak spots?  If there are, take it down and do it again.  Like everything else this will take practice.

To take your shield down, just reverse the process.  Feel it become less solid and start spinning it counter-clockwise.  As it spins feel the energy spinning out, heading back to were you pulled it from originally.  Again, shielding isn’t black and white.  You don’t ever have to take your shield down all the way unless you want to.  You can just thin it out if you’re in a situation where it’s appropriate.
