Energy Basics: Grounding

There are MANY ways to ground and it’s entirely acceptable that you find whatever method works best for you.  As long as it does the job, there is no need for it be whatever Grand High Misters of the Pink Fuzzy Wand says it should be.  What follows here is what I have found to work.  I absolutely encourage you to look at and try other methods you come across.

Grounding is generally the first thing I teach people as it’s easy to learn and a fairly wide spread thing.  If you go to public circles, know how to ground is VERY useful.  So is understand Energetic Hygiene.  It’s amazing how many people think throwing their energy out to all and sundry is a good idea *shudders*

Theory

The whole point of Grounding is exactly what it sounds like.  You want to make a ground for your energy.  Don’t worry, doing so will NOT sap you of all your energy, you will not faint from lack of energy and you will NOT be providing a conduit for evil entities to climb into your soul.

All your ground does is provide a shunt for access energy to travel harmlessly into the earth.  Without it, if you have a habit of taking in energy form a place or people you’re around, the build up will become problematic.  No, you aren’t going to blow up.  This isn’t Hollywood.  But it WILL effect your physical and emotional state.  common symptoms of excessive energy is irritability, seemingly random flare ups of tempers and an inability to sit still.  It is also likely to make concentration near impossible, and can lead to worse things like paranoia (though there is usually some other per-existing mental condition being affected).  Basically, it’s not pleasant.  So, lets go onto the how of Grounding.

What follows is designed for someone that has never grounded before and doesn’t know what they are doing/feeling.  When you get comfortable with this exercise you’ll be able to modify it so that all you have to do is think of your ground and it will snap into place.  But for now, go through ALL the motions and really feel it.

Exercise

If possible, find a quiet place you can practice.  Outside is great, but not necessary.  Nor do you need to be on the ground floor of a building.  What you do need to start with is a place where you feel safe and won’t be distracted.

Plant your feet shoulder width apart, arms at your sides. Rock back and forth on them until you find the position where you feel most stable.  Close your eyes and just breathe.  See if you can feel the energy that is in your body.  If you can, that’s seriously awesome.  If you can’t, don’t sweat it, you’ll get there.

When you feel calm (eyes still closed) slowly begin raising your straight arms out of the side until they are up a as high as is comfortable.  If that’s shoulder height that’s find, if you want to have your arms up besides your ears, do it.  As you are raising your arms, try to feel the energy moving inside you.  Feel how it swirls and eddies in response to your actions.

Now, slowly lower your straight arms out to the sides and down until your palms are touching your thighs.  As you move your arms down start pushing your energy down your body to your feet (remember, you are NOT going to push it all out, your energetic body will take care of itself and not let you move more then is safe, so you’re fine) when your arms are about half way down.  As you continue pushing your arms all the way down, feel the energy moving through your feet down into eh earth under you.

Note: for this exercise, it’s useful to visualize a puce coloured spike coming from your feet and going down into the earth.  Do not using tree roots.  You want a single termination point.  And colour puce seems to be particularly effective for energy work.

Feel the energy move down into the earth, but also pay attention to how YOU feel.  Do you feel calmer?  More stable?  If so, then you have successfully grounded.  If you haven’t, take a breather, get something to eat and try again.

Once you have successfully Grounded, take as long as you need to get used to that feeling and how it relates to your ground point in the earth.  That point is not a fixed thing.  It doesn’t matter WHERE you are, you can find your ground point and make a connection with it.  You do NOT need to stay grounded at all times.  But you should be able to re-establish your connection a moment’s notice and as needed.  And once you have the connection, you can pull energy into your body as well as shunt it into the earth.

Grounding is the first step in learning to work with energy.  And it’s a very important step.  Unfortunately, because it’s so very basic, people often assume that everyone already knows how to do it, which often isn’t the case with new people.  and like any skill it requires practice to master.

If you ever feel like you’re in danger of flying off in a million directions, try Grounding.  Likewise if you are bouncing like you’re severely caffeine buzzed with out the aid of coffee or the like.

The next step is Centering.
